Highlights:

Anchovies were dominant again in the far north and was also recorded in Nelson and the West Coast. Pilchard almost disappeared except for Nelson while Sprat was found in the Allans Beach sample. Tarakihi was important at Allans Beach and also occurred at the West Coast, with Barracouta becoming important at Cape Sanctuary and Allans Beach. Warehous became important in the south at Allans Beach.
The Sauries family had two species: Saury found in New Zealand waters, and recorded in the Muriwai Beach sample, Moturiki Island sample and significantly in the Cape Sanctuary summer sample. It is likely taken as a pelagic youngster. The second species identified in this family was the Pacific Saury that is extralimital and found from Mexico to Alaska and was identified to species making is a very unusual record.
Needlefishes were the dominant species in the summer sample from Cape Sanctuary, making this an unexpected result. It may be possible the Needlefishes will migrate with ocean warming to the cooler waters of New Zealand. If that happens, we expect them to be recorded in future samples from locations on the North Island. The species of Needlefishes is still unknown, and they were only recorded as a family.
