Two species in this family were identified in the kororā diet samples, Red gurnard Chelidonichthys kumu and Red scorpion fish Scorpaena papillosa.

Red gurnard: or kumukumu are found off Northland to Stewart Island. They grow to 55cm and can be found in depths of 10 to 200m.

Red scorpion fish: is widespread in New Zealand from Three Kings Islands to Snares Islands. It grows to 25cm long and occurs in depths of a few meters to 50m.
