Highlights:

Anchovies and Sardines have small adults (up to 14cm Anchovies, Pilchards up to 22cm and Sprats up to 22cm) so kororā are likely to eat them at any age and size. Anchovies and Pilchards are warm-water species and Sprats cold-water species. It is no surprise that Anchovies and Pilchards were found in the diet of northern kororā and as far south as Cook Strait. However, Anchovies were found in the sample from South Island West Coast in spring 2024 and winter 2025, and more recently at Allans Beach in the winter 2025 sample. This may be an indication that they are moving south with warmer oceans, and it is likely due to climate change. Pilchard, the other warm-water sardine has only been recorded as far south as Cook Strait, but they may show up further south in the future with warming oceans.
