Two species were identified in this family: Saury Scomberesox saurus, a New Zealand species, and Pacific Saury Cololabis saira not usually found in New Zealand waters and therefore extralimital.

Saury: is also called Ocean piper or Needle fish, and is widespread in New Zealand and can grow to 50cm. It is found from the ocean surface to a depth of about 30m and can occur in schools at or near the surface.
