Sometimes there are unexpected obstacles that won’t move!
The amusing shenanigans of the NZ sealions in Dunedin regularly make the newspaper here, but even on the outer coast of the Otago Peninsula you have to watch your step because they can appear anywhere at any time. Allans Beach is a popular destination for locals and visitors to see sealions, so they are always present - and wonderful to see. Not so wonderful when they climb into the kororā cave, poop, throw up and then hang about right next to the nest boxes. And no, you can’t check the nest boxes when a sealion is right next to them: you have to come back in a day or two and try again. The upside of this particular encounter was that this female sealion had kindly left behind a cast (aka little vomit of hard parts) that was used to work out what she had eaten: thankfully no penguin feathers, but mostly octopus’ beaks!
